I would look for a Rheumatologist that is a gout specialist Although all rheumatologists think they can treat gout there are some that specialize in the treatment of gout This is where I would start They can confirm a diagnosis if they stick a needle in the joint and pull fluid When looking at the fluid under a microscope if there are urate These crystals can attract white blood cells leading to severe gout attacks Several other kinds of arthritis can mimic gout so proper diagnosis is essential Gout is suspected when a patient experiences joint swelling and intense pain followed at least at first by pain free periods between attacks Initial gout attacks often occur at night
